25-04-2000 | Feast Day of Mark, from the Latin, 'of Mars' - the Roman god of war.. If the young man whose house was used for the Last Supper, and who - wrapped only in a sheet - stole after Jesus and his disciples to the Garden of Gethsemane is the author of Mark's Gospel, and also Paul's companion and Peter's amanuensis, we can build up a surprisingly full picture of St Mark. He was probably too young to have been allowed to join Jesus' followers but was obviously drawn to this great teacher, to whom his mother had opened her house. Despite his symbol being a winged lion, however, Mark was perhaps as nervous as the rest of us. As well as running away from the soldiers in the garden on that fateful night, leaving the only thing he was wearing in their hands, he abandoned Paul on his first missionary journey, being rather overwhelmed by it all. It took all the persuasion of his cousin Barnabas, who was with them, to reconcile Paul to Mark. Still, Mark did recover his courage - and it is a braver person who conquers fear than feels none - and joined Paul again. He accompanied him to Rome where he wrote what is probably the first Gospel. Most scholars believe that this was the memoir of Peter, although it has far more to it than that since it is so cleverly constructed to give the Gospel message 'between the lines'. We do not know what became of Mark after Peter and Paul were executed. It is said that he became Bishop of Alexandria and Was martyred there, and that his body was moved to Venice in the ninth century. |
